Detailed information

Product detailed description

The story of the iconic Opinel brand begins in the 19th century when merchant Victor-Amédée Opinel learned how to forge nails during his travels and founded his first forge in France. After his death, his son, Daniel, took over the craft, becoming the local farmer's "sharps maker" simply because the blades of his sickles and scythes were the sharpest in the area.
However, the real Opinel pocket knife had to wait a while to be born. Daniel Opinel's eldest son, Joseph, decided to follow in his father's footsteps and, driven by a passion for handcrafting and the latest technology, decided to create an object that he could hand-make using the then-modern technologies. The year was 1890 and the real, folding, pocket knife was born, Opinel was born.
95% of the wood used to make the handles comes from sustainably managed French forests. There is no excessive deforestation and air pollution during long transport – all of this puts less strain on nature. The main wood supplier has its forests in the French Jura region and is of course a PEFC certified supplier.
The choice of steel is one of the most important materials for the knife itself. It determines the durability and quality of the blade itself. High-quality Swedish steel 12C27 (Sandvik) was chosen for Opinel knives. This steel is highly resistant to corrosion and easy to maintain thanks to the addition of chromium. The addition of carbon in the steel (0.40%) ensures an excellent edge that holds its shape even when in contact with harder material without the need for grinding.

Opinel - a French brand from the Savoy Alps

It all started in a small workshop in 1890. Joseph Opinel makes a folding knife, his first. The small workshop in Chambéry (Savoy Alps) in France gradually grew until the Opinel brand became synonymous with high-quality materials, blades made of premium steel, unsurpassed sharpness and wood originating from 95% of local forests.

Chambéry remains the production center to this day. Blades are forged here from top-quality Swedish carbon or stainless steel, handles are carved and knives are then assembled by hand and ground to a high degree of sharpness. 95% of the wood used to make the handles comes directly from France, the rest is exotic wood imported for the handles of luxury gift knives. And it's worth it. Judge for yourself: do you prefer ebony, zebrano or rosewood?
